Keyboard Recommendation Series Part 6: Compact Keyboard Recommendation-Keychron Q2

The Keychron Q2 is a compact wired keyboard that feels very similar to the Keychron Q1, but it's smaller and has upgraded PBT keycaps of a different shape. It's height-adjustable and comes in a barebones version, so you can install your own switches and keycaps. There's also one with a programmable knob. Having tested the fully assembled version with the tactile Gateron G Pro Brown switches, it feels light to type on and is surprisingly quiet. Unlike most other Keychron editions, there is custom software available so each key is macro-programmable, and the custom software works on Windows and macOS as well as Linux. It just doesn't come with a wrist rest, but you can buy one separately for extra comfort. While its PBT keycaps are a significant upgrade from the ABS keycaps commonly found on Keychron units, they're not translucent, so the backlighting won't be particularly bright. Also, while its latency is fairly low, it's not particularly noticeable.

Gaming performance The Keychron Q2 is an impressive gaming keyboard. It feels really good and has customizable RGB backlighting. Although our Gateron G Pro Brown switches have a fairly long pre-travel distance, they still provide a decent typing experience, and if you prefer another switch, that's fine as it's a hot-swappable board, and you can install whatever you like shaft. Plus, its latency is fairly low, and all of its keys are macro-programmable via companion software, available on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Mobile Performance The Keychron Q2 is not designed for mobile devices or tablets as it is a wired keyboard. However, it uses a USB-C to USB-C connection, so you can plug it into a device that has a USB-C port and all keys (including hotkeys) will work.

Office performance Keychron Q2 is a very suitable keyboard for office use. It feels very solid and durable. The Gateron G Pro Brown switches on the device provide great tactile feedback, and the overall typing quality is very good thanks to the PBT keycaps. Also, the sound-absorbing foam on the board helps dampen the noise, so you shouldn't disturb others around you, although noise levels will vary from axis to axis. The board is also fully compatible with Windows and macOS. If you use it for a long time, you need to buy a wrist rest yourself.

Programming Performance The Keychron Q2 is an excellent programming keyboard. The Gateron G Pro Brown switches on the unit help provide a great, lightweight typing experience, and the board itself feels very well made. All of its keys are macro-programmable via companion software, available on Windows, macOS and Linux. Unfortunately, since it's a wired-only board, it can't handle multi-device since you can't connect it wirelessly.

Entertainment Performance The Keychron Q2 isn't ideal for a home theater PC because it wasn't designed for that use. It's wired, so you have to run a cable from your seating area to your PC. Also, it doesn't have a trackpad, so you'll need an extra device to help you navigate the screen.

The main feature of this keyboard is a high degree of customization and excellent typing feel. Except for games and office programming, other aspects are mediocre.
