The laser tracks the movement cross a surface. It transmits the data into the computer in the mouse and converts into data that the mouse driver software understands. Then that data travels to the wireless transmitter in the mouse. Either it be IR or bluetooth, it transmits a radio frequency signal that is recieved by the IR reciever or blluetooth module. this data goes through to the mouse driver software built into the OS. this controls the pointer on the screen. It may stagger or lag because of a low battery, or a rough surface. Text in a book may cause this, but is not likely. You may have to clean the laser with a cloth or tissue. Also, if you are using the mouse on a book cover that is glossy, that may cause it. Try using it on a non reflective surface such as a desk. It should be, it wont be a very healthy mouse in the longrun, but it depends how long your snake waits before eating again, if its a week it should be good, if not then it could die due to lack of nuitrition. Why do you feel the need to clean an optical mouse? It does not accumulate dirt the way older ball mice used to. And yes, you need to use an optical mouse on a non glossy, non multicolored surface. Can't get mouse to wake up computer from standby?
if it's a USB mouse, that's why. get a ps/2 mouse if your laptop supports that. be careful that 's not a svideo connnector (you can burn either the svideo or the mouse out)! the usb mouse or keyboard or other usb devices can not be powered by the bus if the computer's in standby or other power-saving mode. I do not think there's a way around that for usb mice. if mouse does not work at all or is flaky, it's dead. get a new one. kensington mice are only $13 at fred meyer. synaptics touchpads often have a switch that powers them on and off. is it on? there is nothing in XP settings-wise that you can enable for mouse movement except the screen saver by right clicking on desktop, picking properties, screen saver tab.
I would pat her down with a warm wet washcloth because the mouse's blood could be disease filled and also many mice eat poisons since people are always using chemical traps to keep them away so if the mouse digested it, it could be passed to your cat. So at least wipe off the blood to make sure

It sounds like for some reason the plastic is stuck. Here are a couple of things you can try ... 1) Put a **tiny** bit of sewing machine oil around the edges of the cover plate. 2) Put the mouse in the freezer (inside a Baggie) for a couple of hours or so. The cold will shrink the plastic a little, hopefully giving it enough room that it will budge. Do not sweat it too badly if nothing works, though. Mice are cheap, so if you end up having to get a new one it's not that big a deal.

Take the ball out of the bottom of the mouse and wipe it with a lint free cloth with some rubbing alcohol and Qtip the little wheels inside. That should help.
