Get a can of the type called #2 1/2. (For instance a big can of fruit.) Half fill it with water, put a paper on top, and secure the paper with a rubber band. Cut an X in the center of the paper. Provide a stick to a nearby shelf or something so the mouse has access to the paper. Suspend a bait about 2" above the X. Peanut butter works well. In the morning you can toss the can out without looking inside. Well, ok, you can look if that's the way you want to do it

Yes it could harm the cat if he ate a poisoned mouse. BTW I wish you would not be using the glue traps - they are the most inhumane thing on the market. Did it ever work in that computer? Is is a usb mouse? Usb 1 ports sometimes lack enough power to operate certain hardware, dunno about a mouse, but just a thought. Do not know if your port is usb 1 or 2 anyway. If you have software installed that came with the mouse, try uninstalling it. Windows comes with drivers that will make it work anyway. My software used to make my mouse behave like yours once upon a time.

See if it looks different with the mouse plugged in vs. unplugged (a mouse will usually be pretty clearly labelled). Next, unplug the mouse and tail -n 20 /var/log/syslog. Then plug the mouse in and do exactly the same thing. This shows you the last 20 lines of messages sent to the system logger; it includes stuff from dmesg, which is from the kernel. It may indicate some kind of USB error.
