Keyboard Layout Doesn't Match the One Selected

I am having the same issue with Uuntu 13.10. However I am ale to resolve the situation without having to log out and ack in again. If you have the "Show current inut source in the menu ar" checkox selected in System Settings - Keyoard - Layout Settings (a.k.a "Text Entry" settings), then even though "English (UK)" will e selected in the dro down menu when you click the icon in the menu ar, if you deselect it (y clicking on the "English (UK)" entry in the dro down list) then it will give you ack your UK layout, which is a little odd. You can then reselect it if you wish and it will still e the UK layout.I know this isn't exactly a fix, ut its a little less drastic than logging out and ack in again.

What's the difference etween Taste and Taster?

There actually is a difference:Taste can e used for more or less anything that is oerated y a finger ress, e.gwhile Taster works for the momentary electrical switch only and is tyically used for single switches (while the switches inside your comuter keyoard might e single "Taster" in an electrical sense, the keys are referred to as "Tasten" in their mechanical sense). So even if the two words are very similar, Taste would normally translate to "key" in English, while Taster tyically translates to "(momentary) switch"Those were the translations in terms of day-to-day usage. Translations for Taster can differ on whether the word is used as a technical term in mechanical or electrical context - Taster is also often used in mechanical engineering for instruments that "feel" a secific measure - Innentaster is the German technical term for "inside calier"

Numeric Keypad, Touchpad, and Minimized Windows Not Working in Windows 10?

Would be helpful if you'd mention the device model and windows version. But is it possible that a little alcohol slipped under the keys while cleaning ?

Although I don't think that's causing the problem but maybe."I also tried updating the drivers, but my computer says they're all up to date." - Did you try updating them from device manager, because that doesn't always work. Its better that you download the touch-pad and keyboard driver directly from the manufacturers website. Also, if you are not on windows 10 v1903 then visit this link: Click update now and check if your issue is resolved.P.S- Next time you make a clean install make sure to make an image after installing all your applications and drivers and fonts , etc. It will save you a lot of time in the future.

Preferred American English term for the enter/return key in the keyboard

You question suggests that you are unaware that the return and enter keys are not necessarily one and the same, although they are on the Mac keyboard you show. It is not a question of US English v. British English (we Brits dont make computers any more) but more of your audience: Mac v PC, or whether you are describing a specific effect to a technical audience. You can read about it in this Wikipedia article, and make your own decision. That said, it would appear from googling that Enter is most common, as it is apparently the preferred PC/Windows usage (I wouldnt know from personal experience as Im also a Mac user), and as your Mac keyboard has both terms (my laptop has neither) Id suggest you use that (perhaps with Return in parentheses if style allows)

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS - Volume control keys

Not sure if this will help too much, but I've found that if you go through the system testing program (I think that's what it's called, anyways it has a thumbnail of a monitor with a green image, just search for it under installed programs) it will sometimes fix things like that. If you want you can just skip all the tests except for the media key tests, but I find that the other tests are still helpful. You can also try googling for changing fn key values, I know a lot of keyboards have the option to reverse the F keys and the funtion buttons, so that for F1 you would need to press Fn F1 for example, and the media key that would normally require Fn would do it without it. Hope I helped you a little bit at least

Using an Apple compact keyboard on Windows how do I enable special keys like Home and PgUp?

Just post my answer here:Solution: update your Apple Wireless Keyboard Driver, then restart your PC, then Fn Arrow work fine.Just tested today: Working on PC with Windows 7 Pro 64 bit (note: it is NOT a Mac). bigger screenshotSteps:Download latest Bootcamp drivers from the file, then open folder BootCamp5.0.5033BootCampDriversAppleRun BootCamp.msi (do NOT run setup.exe as it will say it is unsupported on this computer model)Wait for the driver installation finish, then restart your PC.On next bootup, run Bootcamp (surprisingly you can !!!), go to Keyboard and choose whether you want F1,F2,etc as standard keyboard function.

For more info, check the Apple Wireless Keyboard keyboard mapping in Windows kb it. No need extra software, just latest drivers from Apple.

Did the Tironian et () have any impact on the ampersand being shift 7 on English keyboards? closed

Although the 7 was the ampersand on IBM's standard keyboard layout, that is hardly universal. The first nine printable characters in ASCII are ! " # $ % & ' ( ), which should give a good clue as to what the top row of a teletype keyboard looked like. On many early teletypes and terminals (and also, BTW, on the Apple ), the shift key toggled bit 4 of the character being produced, thus it would turn a 1 (011 0001) into ! (010 0001), and , (010 1100) into ------

Perpetual SSH connnection security and practical implications

What are / are there security implications of leaving a ssh connection perpetually open? The session key is renegotiated periodically so there aren't many confidentiality issues. You can configure the time between renegotiates with RekeyLimit (second parameter to that directive) if that's a concern for you.As shadowbq kind of alluded, the security issues are basically the same as running any other remote control client perpetually. Meaning it potentially increases the attack surface of your internal network in a way that's dependent on the physical security of the workstation. What are / are there practicality implications? I.e. network usage, etc...Next to nil. The server and client will occasionally rekey the session but outside of that it's just the normal SSH-level and TCP-level keepalives that get sent. We're probably talking about a few KB worth of network packets over the span of half an hour though

Key mappings in Linux

I use a MacBook Pro and don't have any problems with key mappings when I log into UNIX systems so the default settings are almost certainly fine and no mappings are needed. I regularly use Debian, Ubuntu, RedHat and Solaris 11.However, what people mean when they say that is in Terminal Preferences under Settings in the Keyboard tab. You can edit your key mappings there.

The only change I've made is to enable use option as meta. With regard to Home and End, I use ctrlA for Home and ctrlE for End instead because I don't like where Home and End keys are on keyboards. I've also changed my caps lock key into another ctrl key (in System Preferences under Keyboard) because that's the traditional location for a ctrl key, it's more comfortable and seriously, who uses caps lock?.

Asus R510D with Windows 8: Want to change volume with one button, rather than fnF10/F11/F12

The short answer is it can't be done unless a there's a BIOS update released by your PC manufacturer for your notebook that lets you use the F1-F12 keys as "hotkeys" (you don't press Fn to access secondary function)However, if you don't mind re-mapping certain keys on your keyboard that you don't use too often, then you could use AutoHotkey to create a remap script that maps a key on yout keyboard to another.I tried this script on my notebook and it worked well. It might work for you as well:Start Notepad and enter the following lines of code into it and save it as VolumeControl.

ahkDownload and install AutoHotkey. Then double click on the newly created AHK script and now whenever you press buttons F1 through F3, your computer's sound volume should mute, decrease and increase respectively

My computer starts a video on the desktop at night. How?

First, remember that one antivirus would only catch specific codes, that are somehow spread and have being analyzed and had a signature created. Yes, there is the heuristic mode, but it's not 100% garantee. So, having a program that was made to bother you by running itself at some specific (or random) time wouldn't be difficult.

Then, assuming you don't have any scheduler running, etc:Do you have some firewall configured in your router / modem / adsl ? You could verify it, or even program it to disable all incoming and outcoming conections from midnight to some specific time. Or you could generate some log and verify if there is any open connection, or someone trying to connect to your computer. Perhaps you have someone connecting to your computer, through some backdoor.

And finally, the best solution, I guess: reinstall your OS, from scratch, and reinstall your applications

What is the keycode for the Dashboard key on Mac OS X?

I'm not too sure about what you wanted to do but here is what I noticed.Actually, F4 is the default shortcut for Launchpad in the System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Launchpad & Dock > Show Launchpad. As for the Dashboard, the default shortcut is F12 in System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Launchpad & Dock > Mission Control. With these two settings, you should be able to achieve what you need.If you need more, you can look into the Karabiner Software for OSX, it contains a lot of pre-configured remappings, but most of all, it has an EventViewer in the Misc & Uninstall tab that shows you what are the keycodes of what you pressed. It could be useful to get the actual keycodes of what you want (except if they are captured by the system before the Karabiner application, but that's another story).

Hope this helps !.

What case to use when saying The book is called?

You are absolutely right, you are to use the Nominative Case when doing that.As for the quotation marks in Russian, using the English-style both-at-the-top quotation marks ( like this ) is not correct. Russian uses two kinds of quotation marks: - French-style - that is the typical and traditional quotation marks used in printed books. - German-style - that is used in printed books to mark a quotation inside a quotation, and also that is used in handwriting: , .To type those Russian quotation marks on a computer with Windows, you have to switch the Num Lock on, hold the Alt key, and type a code on the numpad, on the right of the keyboard. Here are the codes: Alt0171 Alt0187 Alt0132 Alt0147Alternatively, you can download and install Ilya Birman's Typography Layout, it is free and has lots of useful symbols which are easy to enter.

Parsing bytes recieved from a keyboard

I could not find a way to understand what the entry meant exactly. The device node that your program is reading from, is a special type of file that is known as an input event interface.

Reading from that file will return data organized as Besides the key/event code and key value, the data includes a timestamp time. The event types and event codes are described here. Try using the utility evtest instead of your program to get a feel for the event interface.

E.G. sample output for pressing & releasing the A key:Be sure that you understand raw keyboard output, i.e. scancodes.

On a PC the keyboard hardware generates scancodes so that every keypress (and release) can be detected.

It is up to software to translate and remap the keypresses, e.g. to ASCII code or ANSI escape sequences.
