Turn off the PC. Take the panel off the bottom of the mouse and remove the ball, then with something like a shishkabab stick clean the two rollers and wheel inside carefully. They will be covered in fluff etc. Then clean the ball and put things back together and restart the PC. The mouse should work more smoothly

If the problem is HW related (did you try the mouse on another PC?), here is what worked for me. I had the same problem with a Logitech G602 mouse. The issue was with hardware button. I opened the mouse (mine has screws hidden behind plastic pads) and put some WD40 on the button just below the wheel. I let it dry a bit, move and used the button several times and added again some WD40 and repeated the click and shake of the button. I reassembled the mouse and voila! the middle click button is working again

If you just bought it; maybe the pickup died. Check its settings and any calibrations. I assume you have rebooted, do not have another pointing device installed and have tried moving the mouse around on different surfaces. If none of the above works; take it back.

How do you know you have a mouse? Did you see it or did you just see it's droppings? If all you saw was droppings they could've been there for years. Buy a mouse trap. Put it where you saw the mouse and/or droppings. Mice like to run around edges, not out in the open, so put traps along the edges of walls, cabinets, etc. If you saw the mouse in the kitchen put a trap behind the fridge. Refrigerators produce heat & the mice love to make their home there. If you saw the mouse in the basement use zip ties to attach traps to pipes that run along the edges of the walls. Mice use these as a "highway" system. You may be able to kill the mouse, but you will need a professional to come and check out your home. It did not just run in the door while you held it open for him. There is a crack or a hole somewhere that needs to be sealed. If there is a crack the size of your pinky fingernail a mouse can get in it. Good luck.

The Old Cat and the Young Mouse

The Old Cat and the Young Mouse (Le vieux chat et la jeune souris) is a late fable by Jean de la Fontaine (XII.5). Written towards the end of his life, its grim conclusion is that 'Youth thinks its every wish will gain success; Old age is pitiless.' La Fontaine prefaces his poem with a dedication to the young Duke of Burgundy, who had asked the poet for a fable on a cat and mouse theme. At that period the young prince was accounted arrogant and self-willed and the tale demonstrates that one cannot always have one's own way. A mouse, caught by an experienced cat, begs for her life, arguing that at present she is small and would be better left to fatten and make a meal for the cat's offspring. He replies that such conduct goes against his nature; his children will feed themselves without his help. The story relates to two earlier fables by La Fontaine. It contrasts with The Cat and an Old Rat (III.18), in which an experienced rat is too canny to be taken in by a cat's tricks and takes care to address it at a distance. In The fisherman and the little fish (V.3), however, a young carp makes almost the same appeal when it is caught - and with as little success. Two composers have adapted the fable to piano pieces in which the contrasting themes of hunter and hunted play against each other. Heitor Villa-Lobos' O gato e o rato dates from 1914 and is all that remains of a lost suite, Fbulas caractersticas (Typical Tales). He would have come across the fable in Joo Cardoso de Meneses e Sousa's Rio de Janeiro translation of 1886. Aaron Copland's "The Cat and the Mouse" was written six years later, when the young composer was studying in Paris, and became his first work to be published.
