Mouse and keyboard take long time to activate when disks are connected
Because they are all sharing the same USB bus, the 7 external have to be spun-up and checked first, in case one of them holds system data. So the USB device polling probably stops until all 7 of those drives are checked. Ensure the devices (specifically the mouse/Kb vs. the drives) are a on separate USB "hubs" (not a physical hub, but the internal "hubs" listed in the Device Manager), or perhaps add an additional/separate USB controller (example) and connect either the drives or the mouse/KB to it

Is there a PC mouse out there that is easy on arthritic hands?
I have arthritic hands and the best mouse I have ever used is Logitech ball with a 3 click thing on it and a middle clicker has a roller on it for scrolling up and down. the mouse itself never moves you use your thumg to move the ball which in turn moves the mouse. It is wonderful. Remember the mouse stays stationary and the thumb does most of the movement. My hands have never been better. The official name is TrackMan Marble Wheel by Logitech. Take care Heather

Mouse stops working and than computer freezes too, help?
This sounds like a driver problem. I am assuming that you are using Windows XP or Vista. The device itself may be faulty. You said that pulling the power plug and plugging it back in is the only way to fix it. I am also assuming that you have tried to unplug the mouse and restart it, and that failed, so you pulled the plug. This mouse uses "Full Speed USB". Are you using a USB 1.0 or 2.0 port? Have you tried different USB ports? The fact that you PC wo not boot without pulling the plug is suspect, too. You may need to update the BIOS. Make sure you are using Signed Drivers for the mouse, as well.
