I have a similiar experience on a HP 2760p Elitebook after reboot.The manual workaround for me is to switch to the text console with ctrlaltf1 and go back to X11 with ctrlaltf7.This magically reinitialize the mouse :-).

Check device maganer and see if the mouse shows up there, perhaps the driver may have been corrupted,try reinstalling it,also make sure and test the port with something else[if it's a usb] to make sure its working,if you still have the problem then could be the mouse

I really am not sure that your cat brought the mouse to you. I think she brought it into the house to torment it until it died, which is a little think unhungry cats do to satisfy their enjoyment of hunting. I have a former employer like that: they like to torment you, so they let you go and catch you and just mess with you. Unfortunately, for the cat, as for my former employer, that is how she gets her jollies. You probably scared the stuffings out of both the cat and the mouse when you screamed. Truth be told, a trap is as cruel as your cat was going to be, and since you already have the best mousetrap in the cosmos living with you, why would you want to go out an buy another one? Do you prefer technology over nature? You can call the local animal shelter, and see if they have a have-a-heart trap small enough for a mouse, which they would rent to you. Or you can go to Home Depot and for $6 you can get one of those ultrasonic things that you plug in. It wo not bother you, and it wo not bother your cat. But the sound is unbearable to mice, and the mouse will vacate the premises without your having to do anything. I bought one of these last year for a little roommate, and she moved out right away.
