If it is a optical mouse, some malfunction in the circuit or the cable connecting it to the PS/2 port in your computer. My suggestion would be to switch off the computer, take out the cable and connect it back again and switch the computer on. If that does not work, then you will have to get a new mouse, my friend. Just a driver. Make/model of mouse and install a driver for it. Some mouse drivers used to default to the serial port. You may need to update to one that reads other ports for the mouse.
